Putting on my Mark Twain House publicity hat, just to reassure everyone: The Mark

Twain House & Museum does have a full roster of events planned for 2010.

For
starters, we're participating in the Hartford Public Library's Big Read program,
their book next year being The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. And Hartford Stage is
putting on a new dramatic version of the book. There'll be exhibits on on
architecture, on Tom, and on Huck. Plenty more to come, so watch this space, and of
course Cindy Lovell's terrific 2010 site.

Susan B. Durkee lives on the property called  The Lobster Pot”, the original farm that
Twain purchased when he came to Redding Ct...This spring we had a Mark Twain
Centennial kickoff here at “The Lobster Pot” and consequently, for the past
2 months, I have been getting many inquiries regarding Mark Twain and
Isabel Lyon, so with the help of the wonderful web designer Brent Colley, we
have launched the site  _www.marktwainlobsterpot.com_
(http://www.marktwainslobsterpot.com)  for those of you who are interested in
Twain's Lobster Pot and Isabel Lyon.

To learn more about Twain and Redding Ct. a visit to Brent Colley's
informative twainproject.blogspot.com and _www.historyofredding.com_
(http://www.historyofredding.com)  will tell you almost everything you need to know
about Twain,  Stormfield, and  Redding, Ct

For any of you traveling East to Connecticut, during this coming Centennial
year..you are always welcome to stop by and share a Toast for Twain on the
  infamous Patio!
Happy Twaining,

U of Missouri-Columbia

Here, in a provisional way, is what we are planning at the Univ. of
Missouri-Columbia:

On March 17, 18, and 19, Ron Powers will deliver three lectures on Twain,
probably to be published as a short book later.  There will also  be an
exhibit put on by the State Historical Society, and on
Saturday, the 20th, we plan to have two lectures in the morning on the music
and architecture of Twain's time and then in the afternoon I will
chair a panel (Ron Powers, Susan Harris, Bruce Michelson, and Louis Budd) on
the topic "Mark Twain in Our Time."

This, as I say, is not set in stone yet.

Thanks for doing this.

Best, Tom

The city of Nashville appears to be one of the first cities taking a lead in Twain
celebrations beginning this month and running through 2010 with a website devoted
soley to Nashville's planned activities:

http://www.twainandtwang.org

I note their schedule of activities includes a performance of the play "The Elusive
Mr. Twain" by Carolyn German scheduled for April 28 - May 1, 2010. I am not familiar
with this production but would be interested in comments from any who have seen or
may see the play. Described as:

Based on historical record, "The Elusive Mr. Twain" imagines the story of two women
living in the post-Civil War South who develop an unlikely friendship after they
discover a mutual dream of becoming newspaper journalists. Encouraged by the
popularity of the legendary author and humorist Mark Twain, the pair sets off "up
North" determined to win an audience with the man himself.

My college has adopted the book as its common reading for the incoming class,
fall 2010, as a way of recognizing the Centennial.

Please let me know if you have suggestions.

Connecticut:

Brent M. Colley    Wed, August 12, 2009 10:53 am

An idea I've been working on for most of the summer is...

To showcase and celebrate Mark Twain's life in Hartford and Redding,
Connecticut throughout the year 2010 to "Mark" the Centennial of his
passing.

This will be accomplished by displaying portraits of him in every public
library and/or public place, that wants to be a part of this celebration,
along with photos and information about his life, his work and his friends
in Connecticut.

The friends of Twain aspect is very important because it ties in many
Connecticut towns to his life, which allows us to make others aware of these
people and their accomplishments. With any luck it will spur community pride
as well.

For example: In Easton, Connecticut we would include information & photos
about his friendship with Helen Keller; In Ridgefield, Connecticut we'd
highlight his friend, Cass Gilbert; In Bethel & Bridgeport, P.T. Barnum; In
Norwalk, E.K. Lockwood; In Westport, Ned Wakeman; Cos Cob/Greenwich, Charles
& Jean Webster; Saybrook, the Fenwick Hotel; Obviously the Hartford area has
many friends.

I feel this idea can be greatly expanded upon once each town and their
historians join me to offer their input and ideas...I'm hope to make
connections all over the State so please send names and ideas! I will be
providing the artwork, and Redding information to all public libraries
and/or public places interested (free). My hope is that the Mark Twain House
will provide some photos and information on Hartford and they have already
reach out to me so that's moving in a positive direction.

The artwork: http://www.susandurkee.com/the-mark-twain-gallery.htm

I am also pursuing an official Mark Twain Day in Connecticut on April 21,
2010. If you feel this is a worthwhile effort, you can assist me in pursuing
the "Mark Twain Day" idea by contacting Governor Rell's office and asking
her to approve it. Governor.Rell@ct.gov

I can be reached at bcolley@colleyweb.com or by phone at 860-364-7475.

It should be great fun,
Brent M. Colley

IF I may add another cause, I'd like to see the centennial of MT's death marked by a
google "doodle," that is, one of the cartoons on the google main page that has the
logo altered in tribute to something or someone.

Wading around the google web pages, I found the blog of Dennis Hwang,
(http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2004/06/oodles-of-doodles.html) who creates these
logos.  He invites suggestions via the Google help forum.

I've posted a request already.  If anybody wants to join me, it's easy enough to do.
